Phrases And Their Origins
Hoist By His Own Petard
If someone falls into a trap of their own devising they are said
to be "hoist by their own petard".
But what is a petard?
And how would you become hoist by one?
We'll send a petard for the winning answer if we can find out where
to get one, and some anti-hoist protection equipment.
Joel: winner!

Petard (pronounced Pe- Tuk!) Adopted by the Klingon language as a
personal representative in a court hearing, picked by the defendant to
display to the court the admirable character of the accused. The word
is believed to have come from old playground and parlour games of
Victorian times. When one would conspire, for example, with the seeker
in Hide & Seek, so that they would pretend not to have found you and
would move on to the smelly, fat or ginger kid.
Incidentally, a Petard is also the strap/coggle combination in a pair of
Dungarees (thereby showing that the original 'Support' meaning has not
changed).
Hoisted by your own petard is actually just a simple 'lesbian wedgie'
where the Petards on the Dungerees are yanked simultaneously causing the
crutch area to rise.
